Printer Directory | Find Printers by City and State
Many of us are familiar with
desktop printing machines used in the homes and offices such as the
inkjets and laser printers. These are lightweight devices that
accommodate the printing of small sized documents and photos either in
black and white or colored format. They are perfect for individual and
minor office needs and are usually very affordable.
Businesses
that require the printing of large sized advertisements and
posters can take advantage of the commercial printers. Commercial
printers can refer to both the company that offers printing services in
bulk and the machines used for printing a big volume of materials.
These machines are capable of printing jobs in huge quantities and
those that need high quality results.
Machines for desktop printing and commercial offset printing may differ
in size and their method of printing but they share one thing in
common. Both use the same four basic ink colors known as the CMYK.
These are cyan which refers to blue, magenta or red, yellow and black
known as the K. Commercial offset printers, however, may use additional
spot colors or premixed inks in different specific colors including
metallic and fluorescent inks.
The way commercial photo printers do the offset printing job is
different from desktop printing as every color of ink is applied
separately. It also makes use of a web or sheet press consisting of
several units. There are printing plates involved that initially
accommodate the ink of each color before transferring it on to paper.
Conversion to CMYK colors and separation of colors are basic processes
in commercial color printing. When graphics with full color are
involved, they need to be saved with the CMYK colors using a graphics
software program. As for separation, one needs to provide a file that
can be separated into a number of files for every ink color. There are
some printers that may require you to save your files as PRN or
PostScript. From this stage, printing plates will then be made for each
color.
When working with a commercial printer, a two-way communication is
vital. First find out all about the printing company such as how long
it’s been operating, its operating hours, the presses they
have available, the number and color printing capabilities, its
specialization, the materials and linescreen they use, modes of payment
and how fast they can finish a project. Ask to see samples of their
work as well.
After you have interviewed a staff, it’s time to present your
project. As a client in search of a cost effective printing method, you
have to discuss with your commercial printer three important things
– the goal of your project, the quantity you will need and
the paper or material you want to use. Provide details of each of these
aspects to give your printer a clearer view of your requirements. Keep
in mind to monitor the progress of the printing job from start of
project to completion to ensure the quality work that you’re
after. By doing this, your printer will also do their best to give you
quality service not only for this project but even for your future
projects.
